"Creating a workforce with knowledge, skills and competences qualified and capable of promoting sustainable exploitation and use of natural resources."

Program Justification

The Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Economics was started as a pioneer programme in East African region. It was designed as a response to the growing demand for Natural Resource Economists both from Government institutions and the Private sector. The degree programme as a discipline analyses the economics of the use of natural resources and their impacts on the environment for sustainable development. The programme provides comprehensive training in economics, environmental science, and the management of natural resources. It integrates the concepts, principles, and methods of these subject matter areas into a very practical degree programme.

Programme Rationale

The Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Economics seeks to create a workforce with knowledge, skills and competences aimed at producing qualified Natural Resource economists,   capable of promoting sustainable exploitation and use of natural resources. The increasing demand for natural resources especially in Developing countries call for development of a human capital base equipped with economic competences to deal with the global trends of resource exploitation amidst resource scarcity. Furthermore, there is a remarkable increase in demand for Natural Resource economists who are capable of handling the emerging environmental related challenges and opportunities arising from the exploitation and use of natural resources. Therefore, the programme is designed to answer the training and career needs of professionals who serve as focal point experts in designing and analyzing policies related to exploitation and use of natural resources, and their consequential environmental impact.

Programme Objectives

The main objective of the Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Economics program is to equip graduates with knowledge, skills and competencies aimed at promoting proper exploitation, valuation and use of natural resources together with the consequential environmental impact for sustainable development. Therefore, the programme seeks to enable students to:

    1. Develop and analyse policies required for sustainable exploitation and management of natural resources
    2. Critique the on-going policy debates locally and internationally and how they impact on the exploitation and management of natural resources
    3. Apply economic models/tools in decision making and valuation of natural resources.
